The Spin

This is a prestige play. Cappu Films is positioning 'Banr' as a universal emotional experience, leveraging the critical buzz from its 2025 Slamdance premiere to secure international distribution and introduce Xia-Hou’s intimate storytelling to a global audience.

The Tea

Insiders are whispering that the 'observational, documentary-style' approach is a calculated risk. By casting non-professionals and filming two-thirds of the movie without a traditional script structure, Xia-Hou is betting that raw authenticity will sell better than polished Hollywood drama in the current indie market.

The Receipts

Hard facts: 'Banr' premiered at the 2025 Slamdance Film Festival. Hong Kong-based Cappu Films has acquired worldwide sales rights. The film stars Sui Li and Baoqing Li. Xia-Hou previously co-wrote 'Fox Hunt' with director Leo Zhang, which starred Tony Leung Chiu-wai, and 'Bleeding Steel' with Jackie Chan.

The Last Byte

Erica Xia-Hou is pivoting from blockbuster action to raw, indie heartbreak, and Cappu Films is betting big that tears sell better than explosions right now.

Erica Xia-Hou, the writer behind the star-studded 'Fox Hunt,' is making a dramatic pivot from high-octane blockbusters to gut-wrenching indie cinema. Hong Kong’s Cappu Films has officially taken on worldwide sales for her latest project, 'Banr,' a Canadian-Chinese drama that dissects a 40-year marriage under the crushing weight of Alzheimer’s disease. After making waves at the 2025 Slamdance Film Festival, the film is now headed to the Busan International Film Festival’s Asian Contents & Film Market, where Cappu is actively pitching it to international buyers.

The film’s production method is as intense as its subject matter. Starring Sui Li and Baoqing Li as the aging couple, with Xia-Hou appearing as their daughter opposite a non-professional cast, 'Banr' eschews traditional cinematic gloss. Roughly two-thirds of the runtime was shot observationally, adopting a documentary-style aesthetic that forces the viewer to sit in the uncomfortable silence of a family watching their matriarch’s memory fade.

It’s a bold, unfiltered look at how love, loneliness, and strain settle into daily routines when the person you love is slowly disappearing before your eyes. Xia-Hou, who wrote, directed, and produced the film, isn’t pulling any punches with her thematic focus. "If memory disappears, does love disappear with it?" Xia-Hou asked in a statement.

"Memory can disappear, a person can disappear, and even a life together can become unrecognizable – but love can remain after the memory that once contained it is gone." This philosophical inquiry anchors the narrative, transforming a medical condition into a profound exploration of human connection beyond cognitive function. This move reunites Xia-Hou with Cappu Films, the same company that holds exclusive international rights to 'Fox Hunt,' the film she co-wrote with director Leo Zhang and starred in alongside Tony Leung Chiu-wai.

That film has already sold into several territories, proving the partnership’s commercial viability. Xia-Hou’s resume also includes the 2017 Jackie Chan actioner 'Bleeding Steel,' which she co-wrote and acted in. Janice Woo of Cappu Films emphasized the film's universal appeal, noting, "The film looks closely at the everyday choices a family makes when someone they love begins to lose their memory." With Cappu’s Busan lineup also featuring 'Fox Hunt' and the Vanilla Ice-starring 'Zombie Plane,' the sales agent is casting a wide net, but 'Banr' remains their emotional heavy hitter.
