The Last Byte

Joseph Mazzello trades dinosaur parks for hotel hallways in a thriller where the building itself does much of the work, backed by a sales agent already locking down international deals.

Joseph Mazzello, known for roles in *Jurassic Park* and *Bohemian Rhapsody*, is heading the cast of *A Grim Life*, a supernatural thriller set inside Los Angeles’ Cecil Hotel. The film is written and directed by Francesco Lucente, who also serves as a producer. It was unveiled at the Tokyo International Film Festival’s TIFFCOM market, where Hong Kong-based outfit Cappu Films picked up international sales rights.

The plot follows Tom, a down-on-his-luck filmmaker played by Mazzello, who pays his bills by scrubbing toilets and obsessively reworks a single script. His life takes a dark turn when a friend introduces him to *Böse*, a lost silent picture from 1931. Tom’s hunt for an artistic breakthrough pulls him toward a dark secret within the hotel.

Lucente describes the project as a "deeply personal" exploration of the darker side of ambition, obsession, and the sacrifices made in pursuit of dreams. He notes that the Cecil Hotel provides an "extraordinary and haunting backdrop" for a story where the boundaries between reality and the supernatural begin to disappear. The film draws its scares from the hotel’s hallways and concealed rooms, leaning on sound, shadow, and Tom’s deepening isolation to tighten the dread.

The supporting cast features Max Beesley, known for *Jack Ryan*, as producer Joe. Wes Studi, a 2019 Academy Honorary Award recipient, plays Nic, while Carl Lumbly from *Captain America: Brave New World* takes on the role of Henry. Arnetia Walker, recognized for her work in *Bookie*, plays Chelsea.

Lucente’s previous directorial credits include the drama *Badland* and the fantasy film *Starbright*. Janice Woo of Cappu Films stated that the Cecil Hotel and the lost film provide an "immediately compelling premise," while Tom’s desperation gives the story its "emotional center." She added that the company is pleased to continue its relationship with Lucente following their work on *Starbright*, noting the project brings together a distinctive atmosphere and an experienced cast.

Cappu first presented the film to buyers in Busan and is keeping those conversations going before cameras roll. Production is set to move into pre-production in December 2026, with principal photography scheduled to begin in January 2027. Delivery is penciled in for July 2027. This project joins a diverse Cappu Films slate that includes another Lucente fantasy, *Sinbad*, as well as action titles *Lion Fist* and *Red Bird*.
