Kari Ann emphasizes that while the property loss is devastating, the family and all pets are safe, which is the only thing that matters right now.
Insiders note the eerie coincidence that the battery was not plugged in when it started smoking, raising questions about the specific e-bike model's safety record.
Video obtained by TMZ shows the battery billowing smoke before exploding. Kari Ann confirms losing 5-bedroom home, artwork, and Playboys. Incident occurred late Thursday night in Troutdale, OR.
One un-plugged battery just erased a lifetime of pageant history and reality TV memorabilia. The house is gone, but at least the receipts are in the cloud.
Kari Ann Peniche is officially out of her house and into a hotel suite, after a terrifying incident late Thursday night saw her Troutdale, Oregon residence go up in flames. The former 'Celebrity Rehab' star told TMZ that the culprit wasn’t a candle or a faulty wire, but an e-bike battery that was sitting near the door. Cameras caught the horrifying moment the device began billowing thick smoke before violently exploding, sending flames shooting out and quickly engulfing the interior.
It’s a nightmare scenario that turns a modern convenience into a household bomb in a split second. The sequence of events started when Kari Ann’s son, who was in the living room, noticed a strange, pungent smell. At first, the family thought their cat had been sprayed by a skunk, a mundane explanation for what was about to become a catastrophe.
But then the son pointed out the source: the e-bike battery, which wasn’t even plugged into the wall, had started to smoke. Kari Ann grabbed her phone to film the rising smoke, capturing the escalating danger right before the battery detonated. The explosion was powerful enough to set the entire structure ablaze, turning their safe haven into a charred skeleton.
Despite the terrifying speed of the fire, the family’s escape was a miracle. Kari Ann, her daughter, her son, her boyfriend, her caretaker, and the caretaker’s wife all made it out of the 5-bedroom house safely. The animals weren’t forgotten either; their cat and three dogs were also rescued from the blaze.
With everyone accounted for, the immediate physical danger passed, but the emotional toll of the loss is heavy. The family is currently staying with relatives while they assess the damage and figure out what comes next. For a celebrity whose career is built on visual history, the loss is particularly cruel.
Kari Ann revealed that the fire destroyed her artwork, paintings, and her personal collection of Playboy magazines and other publications she had appeared in. Gone are the gowns from her pageant days, representing a significant chapter of her life and public persona. She described the loss as "devastating," yet remained grounded by the fact that no humans or pets were injured. In the world of celebrity, losing your property is bad, but losing the physical evidence of your past stardom is a different kind of tragedy.
