The Last Byte

Garner’s expansion from lead actress to executive producer on 'Guilty Creatures' highlights a strategic shift in her career, aligning her creative output with high-profile industry partnerships.

Apple TV’s upcoming series “Guilty Creatures” has added three recurring guest stars, Variety has learned exclusively. Brian d’Arcy James, known for “The Copenhagen Test” and “Rabbit Rabbit,” Reed Birney (“Blue Film,” “Silo”), and Gus Birney (“Shining Vale,” “Black Rabbit”) are set to appear in the series. The show is based on the Mikita Brottman true crime book “Guilty Creatures: Sex, God, and Murder in Tallahassee, Florida.” As previously announced, Julia Garner will star in the series along with Lewis Pullman, Maddie Hasson, Mary-Louise Parker, and Gabriel Basso.

The logline states that the show “delves into the psyche of a torrid romance and subsequent act of murder between two young, adulterous but God-fearing lovers, unraveling their complex lives and the emotional toll of living as killers for 18 years.” Beyond her acting role, Garner will executive produce through her production company, Alma Margo. This adds a layer of creative control to her involvement in the project. Both Alma Margo and Fortunate Jack Productions are under first-look deals with Tomorrow Studios, an ITV Studios partner that developed the project and brought it to Apple.

The creative team includes Craig Gillespie, who is attached to direct and executive produce under his Fortunate Jack Productions banner. Sarah DeLappe, writer of “Bodies Bodies Bodies” and “The Regime,” will write and executive produce. Stuart Zicherman serves as showrunner and executive producer.

Additional executive producers include Marty Adelstein, Becky Clements, and Alissa Bachner for Tomorrow Studios, along with Annie Marter of Fortunate Jack and author Brottman. Stephanie Laing is set as executive producer and director. Regarding representation, James is repped by Gersh and Thruline.

Reed Birney is repped by Paradigm and Suskin/Karshan Management, while Gus Birney is repped by CESD and Suskin/Karshan Management. The casting of the Birneys and James adds significant theatrical and screen weight to the ensemble as the series moves forward.
