Jessica Rothe continues her reign as the queen of elevated genre cinema, while Brainstorm Media doubles down on its niche for smart, scary indie hits.
The buzz from Austin hasn’t died down; it’s just moved to the boardroom. 'Imposters,' the sci-fi thriller that made waves at SXSW 2026, has officially secured U.S. distribution with Brainstorm Media. The independent distributor plans to give the film a proper theatrical rollout in early 2027, signaling their confidence in the project’s ability to captivate niche audiences who crave high-concept horror.
For Jessica Rothe, this deal reinforces her status as a go-to star for genre films that punch above their weight class, following her previous collaborations with the same distributor on 'Affection.' At the helm is Caleb Phillips, a first-time feature director who also penned the screenplay. Phillips isn’t a newcomer to the festival circuit’s radar; his short film 'Other Side of the Box' previously earned awards at both SXSW and BiFan.
The plot centers on a terrifying domestic mystery: after a couple’s baby is abducted, the frantic mother retrieves the child, only for the husband to suspect that the infant she brought home isn’t actually theirs. This premise, blending parental anxiety with sci-fi paranoia, clearly resonated with buyers, as the film has since traveled to major festivals including Beyond Fest, Chicago, Edinburgh, and Sitges. The U.S. acquisition is just one piece of a larger, lucrative puzzle assembled by U.K. sales company Blue Finch Films.
In the run-up to the American Film Market (AFM), Blue Finch closed a batch of international deals that span the globe. Vortex picked up Canada, while Umbrella Entertainment secured Australia and New Zealand. In Europe, the rights were fragmented among Tiberius for Germany, VOD Factory for France, A Contracorriente Films for Spain, Vendetta Filmes for Portugal, Plaion for Italy, and PremiereTV for Benelux.
Further afield, Particular Crowd took Latin America, Falcon Films grabbed the Middle East and North Africa, and BookMyShow acquired India. Produced by Thomas Bond and Sara Seligman as the first feature under their new banner, Broken Pig Productions, the film also boasts Joe Bandelli of Marylous’ Boys as a producer, known for the 'Hell House LLC' franchise. Brainstorm Media’s recent slate demonstrates their sharp eye for this specific type of content, having previously released Rothe’s 'Affection,' Melanie Lynskey’s 'Pike River,' and Marisa Tomei’s 'You’re Dating a Narcissist.' With 'Imposters,' they are betting that the combination of Rothe’s star power and Phillips’ atmospheric direction will translate into box office success for the indie sector.
