The Spin

Infinity Festival organizers are framing this as a celebration of enduring storytelling impact and Martin's personal dedication to bringing the work of his late friend Howard Waldrop to the screen.

The Tea

While Martin is the headline act, the real industry buzz is around the massive animation lineup featuring Spike Lee and Brad Bird, suggesting the festival is trying to position itself as the new heavyweight in prestige content recognition.

The Receipts

The award ceremony is set for Nov. 12-15 at the Audrey Irmas Pavilion in Los Angeles. Martin will be honored alongside Oscar-winner Brad Bird. The festival also features the ASIFA-Showcase on Nov. 14-15 with screenings of 'Apart,' co-written by Spike Lee.

The Last Byte

Martin gets the flowers he’s always deserved, but don’t sleep on the animation star power backing this event.

George R.R. Martin is finally getting the lifetime achievement nod he’s been owed for years, but with a twist that proves he’s still deeply embedded in the sci-fi community he helped define. The creator of A Song of Ice and Fire has been tapped to receive the Monolith Lifetime Achievement Award at this year’s Infinity Festival, an event taking place from November 12-15 at the Audrey Irmas Pavilion in Los Angeles.

This isn’t just a generic trophy for the Game of Thrones mastermind; the festival is specifically highlighting his dedication to bringing the work of his longtime friend, science-fiction author Howard Waldrop, to the screen. The centerpiece of Martin’s appearance will be a special screening of Heirs of the Perisphere, a science-fiction short film he produced that recently premiered at the Santa Fe International Film Festival. Directed by Chris Eyre and written by Caroline Spector, the film is based on a short story by Waldrop.

The plot follows three animatronic robots who awaken after centuries of silence to discover humanity has vanished, embarking on a journey to find their creators. Martin is expected to participate in a conversation with attendees, offering fans a rare glimpse into his creative process outside the Westeros universe. Martin isn’t the only heavyweight getting the gold, as he joins Oscar-winning filmmaker Brad Bird as a co-recipient of the Monolith award this year.

Mark Lieber, co-founder of Infinity Festival, emphasized the significance of the honor, stating, “George R.R. Martin has had an extraordinary impact on storytelling, creating worlds and characters that have captivated audiences for generations.” The award recognizes individuals whose contributions have left a lasting impact on entertainment, a description that fits Martin’s decades-long influence on genre fiction and television. Beyond the lifetime achievement honors, the festival is making serious moves in the animation world, which is often overlooked in mainstream Hollywood awards chatter.

The ASIFA-Showcase, running November 14-15 in partnership with ASIFA-Hollywood, has just added Pola Maneli, director of the animated short Apart, to its lineup. Apart, which co-written by Spike Lee and premiered at the 2026 Tribeca Festival, explores the friendship between two boys against the backdrop of apartheid-era South Africa. The showcase will feature exclusive screenings and conversations with talent including Seth Rogen, Lauren Miller Rogen, and Mel Brooks, alongside representatives from major studios like Pixar, Netflix Animation, and DreamWorks. With LAIKA president Travis Knight delivering an opening keynote, this event is shaping up to be a massive convergence of live-action prestige and animation artistry.
