The Spin

Leonberg is positioning himself as Hollywood's next horror auteur, leveraging his SXSW breakout success to tackle high-concept psychological thrillers with major studio backing.

The Tea

Insiders whisper that Republic Pictures is betting big on Leonberg's specific brand of grounded, intimate horror after seeing how 'Good Boy' resonated with Shudder subscribers. The question is: can he sustain the hype without a cute dog protagonist to carry the weight?

The Receipts

1. 'Look Out' novella released May 2025. 2. Leonberg's 'Good Boy' premiered at SXSW 2025 and was acquired by IFC Films/Shudder. 3. Script co-written by Alex Cannon, Leonberg's 'Good Boy' collaborator.

The Last Byte

Leonberg is trading furry friends for fatal rules. If 'Good Boy' was the appetizer, 'Look Out' is the main course for his rising horror empire.

Ben Leonberg is officially done playing nice with puppies. The director behind the SXSW sensation "Good Boy" is diving headfirst into a new kind of isolation, teaming up with Republic Pictures to direct and co-write the film adaptation of the horror novella "Look Out." This isn't just another studio hire; it's a strategic move for Leonberg, who is rapidly becoming the go-to name for intimate, high-concept horror that punches above its weight.

By reuniting with his "Good Boy" writing partner Alex Cannon, Leonberg is doubling down on a creative chemistry that already delivered critical acclaim and festival buzz. The source material is fresh off the press, having been released in May 2025 as the inaugural installment in Vertigo Entertainment and Artists Writers and Artisans' (AWA) "Future of Fear" partnership. Written by Dan Baillie with artwork by Tim Bradstreet, the novella sets the stage for a claustrophobic nightmare.

The official logline describes Oscar, a man recuperating from a divorce who takes a job as a fire lookout at a remote forest outpost. There, he discovers a paper inscribed with a strange set of rules that promise to keep him safe during his watch. It’s a premise that screams tension, moving away from the supernatural force of a sick owner in "Good Boy" to the psychological unraveling of a solitary man bound by mysterious regulations.

Production is already in motion with heavy hitters behind the scenes. Roy Lee and Andrew Childs are producing for Vertigo Entertainment, while Zach Studin represents AWA. Republic Pictures is clearly placing its chips on Leonberg’s ability to translate literary dread into cinematic terror.

This deal comes at a pivotal moment for the director, who has two other projects in the pipeline: "Ankle Snatcher" for Sony Pictures, adapting Grady Hendrix’s short story, and "Follow Mode," a serial killer thriller currently in post-production for Temple Hill. The latter follows teens who knock down a drone containing footage of a psychopath, proving Leonberg’s affinity for technology-driven horror is just as potent as his animal instincts. Leonberg’s representation, including Verve, Untitled, and attorney Ryan Nord at The Nord Group, has clearly orchestrated a smooth transition from indie darling to studio staple.

While plot details for the film adaptation remain tightly under wraps, the industry is watching closely. Can a story about a fire lookout and a list of rules generate the same viral energy as a dog defending his owner from ghosts? With Vertigo’s track record of successful adaptations and Republic’s backing, the stakes for "Look Out" are incredibly high. Leonberg has the receipts from "Good Boy" to prove he can deliver, but this time, there’s no cute dog to save him if the script falls flat.
